A little bit older now

And so I must write an ode to old:

I have a suspicion

(although not so much tradition,

on this day each year or sometime near)

that writing lines of verse

show I’m not averse

to change.

So now I’m older by one

Trying to manage what cannot be done

-Follow the Leader

I try and I do

Makes me wiser (it’s true)

Each year I grow nearer

until that day when I won’t grow no mo’

and I’m there.

WOW! Right up there with Thanatopsis, to be sure!

I like it. Kudos for demanding of the poem a working rhythm. Nicely done.

Does “trying to manage what cannot be done”refer to “follow the leader”? If so, is it not then contradicted (contraindicated) by “I try and I do”?

The dash where it is gives me this idea. If you put the dash on the next line, it might solve it (if needed).

I have no memory of thanatopsis at present.

the speaker is “trying to manage” his life and his aging, neither of which can really be done. The only thing there is to do is to “follow the Leader”. You do know who the Leader is, no?

Well, regarding Thanatopsis, I’m more than twice the age of that author, and my outlook is a sight better, I ‘m certain. His is an interesting poem though.

I got it – the point. Good thinking, by the way.
(You can look up Thanatopsis on the web. I
had to memorize part of it in high school.)
